Ex-Captain now doing marine compliance and safety management
Holyhead is situated on Holy Island, Anglesey. The sea surrounds it and gives it a reason to be. There I began a lifetime’s relationship with the sea.
I worked on the Holyhead 1 which came on the route as a new type of ferry, although it was the last of the turbine steamers for the railway company.
It was my first job abroad in a place that couldn’t be more different from Holyhead and filled me with uncertainty.
I was employed as the waterfront boson by the Outward Bound School in Hong Kong.
Outward Bound encouraged people to discover what they are truly capable of.
The Ji Fung was Hong Kong’s Outward Bound 132ft sail training ship.
It wasn’t long before I was sailing on the Ji Fung as an Officer of the watch and then later as relief mate.
In April of 1988 I made another big decision which was to leave Outward Bound, which I loved, for a job offer to work as the service manager of the Power Boat Division of Simpson Marine Management Ltd Hong Kong.
In March 1990 I became dock master and assistant marine manager of Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club Marina
